Title: Mutant Multiplayer

It's been months since the world was nearly swallowed whole by a celestial creature of myth. And in that time, no one's really gotten much of a look at Ms. Ember Reynolds. Enough to know that she was around and came through the fight more or less intact, but beyond that she's been a bit… not quite there. The occasional corner of the eyes kind of sighting around the grounds, and she's been keeping up solo training sessions overseen by the Professor but she's not been at any group meals or outings in that entire time.

So her being out in the daytime in an actual public portion of the mansion is a new thing. Although her taking an unknown number of opponents to school in Halo is not. She's standing at the TV, controller in hand and very calmly destroying her opposition and not seeming to pay over much attention to her surroundings.

***

Marie was standing behind the rich mahogany bar today, she's holding an ice cold bottle of some old-timey root beer and she's glancing at the various students around the rec room this afternoon. Her eyes went to the commotion at the couches with the video games and she stared at the tv to try to figure out what was going on on it, killing and shooting… space stuff… they all seemed to be having a good time though. She released a light exhale and looked down at her phone that was on the counter, she tapped on its screen a few times, texting someone maybe.

***

It's almost a herd of people, and they are all dressed the same in the blue minidress that the identical sisters are wearing, and they come in and immediately spread apart. One heads immediately towards the snack area, to sift through and look about the various chips and cookie packages, idly bored of them but still hunting for something in particular. Another one moves to a table and sits, opening up a book and immediately starts sketching. A third goes over to the video game area with Ember and sits down on a couch, crossing her legs and waiting for her turn, which will be next no matter how many have been waiting ahead of her. The fourth goes off into a corner and starts reading, while the fifth takes a longer look around, not having left much beyond the entrance.

The Cuckoo nearby Marie looks over at her and says, "It is Halo, video game, first person shooter. Irma's very good at them. Did you see where the oatmeal cookies went? Not these." She holds up a package of one brand, "The other ones…?" The Cuckoo nearby Ember watches the gameplay, and studies the person playing, squinting her eyes at the screen and diverting some attention to look over at Ember, waiting for her turn to play.

***

Ducking, dodging, always in motion even when her spartan is behind cover. Quick kills and quicker retreats, and not once does her Spartan's shield drop. Whenever the action on the screen gets to be particularly intense, Ember doesn't tense up or make any kind of comment. She just becomes… not there for an instant or so, her body and clothing turning fully glassy-transparent or even invisible. And then she's back again. After a particularly intense exchange with the match timer winding down to 00:00, she raises her hands in a triumphant pose and lets a victory shout that registers as a bare whisper of sound. She takes a moment to bask as the match results show with her gamertag 'GiantPeachPit' at the top of the rankings with a 54-to-0 kill/death ratio. Then her division rankings appear as she exits that menu with her tag at rank 6 in the 'Pro' diviison.

She falls backwards onto the couch, although she falls more slowly than a solid body should and actually seems to sink into the cushins a bit. This is when she seems to actually notice that she's not alone in the room and looks about at the faces, most of which are nearly identical to each other. The controller is waved a bit, "Um… hi. Anyone want next?"

***

Marie is taking a swig from her bottle of rooted beer when she hears the Cuckoo's question beside her. She flashes the young girl a smile. "Yeah, they're over here." She says, stepping around the blonde girl to the cabinets between the fridges. Rogue reaches up into one and yanks out the box of oatmeal cookies. She turns and offers it to the Cuckoo. "Don't flil up on that sugary junk though, I think there's some big meal planned tonight." Marie was currently the only teacher in the Rec Room at the moment and her eyes swept back over to the sofa where the gaming was going on. "First person shooter?" She asks. "So like, first person to shoot wins?" Video games weren't her… thing…

***

Laura has given up on trying to rearrange her room for now and heads downstairs. She tilts her head as she hears the noise coming from the rec room and silently makes her way there, pausing in the doorway as she looks over those present.

***

"Big dinner?" The Cuckoo nearby Marie quirks her mouth and shakes her head, "I hate those things. Everyone all around. People stare you know, and it's not easy being one of us. Hot, smart, top of the class. Lots of jealousy, well, technically envy I guess." The blonde teenager takes the box of cookies and stays at the bar before adding, "Jeez. Old much? First Person, you are in First Person, as in, seeing what the character would see, and you shoot. It should really become a requirement that all professors at least know, ya know, that much." With that she opens up the box of cookies and pulls one out, starting to eat, her fingers flicking off excess cookie dust.

When Ember wins, the Cuckoo, Irma, picks up a controller and wonders, "Wanna play local versus? I'm really good. I mean, probably not the best in the world, but that's only because I haven't met the best in the world yet. If I did, I'd totally win. Sometimes two or three matches." The Cuckoo version of crap talking.

The Cuckoo nearby the door smiles over to Laura, "Hi there. I hear there's some sort of big dinner happening tonight, are you sticking around for that?" She gives a cordial enough wave to Laura, before saying, "Come on over, let's sit down." Cuckoos everywhere!

***

Ember doesn't seem to be overly thrilled about finding herself surrounded and visible. Well, only semi-transparent at least. But the trash talk from Irma brings her back to herself somewhat. Her body's form becomes sharper around the edges as well as fully opaque and solid looking, eventually causing the sofa beneath her to deform normally. "We'll see about that. Only five players above me in the world, after all." Her voice starts at a bare whisper but as she seems to solidify it also becomes more 'present' and conversational. She doesn't react to the mention of a 'big meal' other than a brief shadow in her eyes as she transfers her tag to the player 2 controller and lets Irma set the map and such.

***

"You don't want to attend it? Don't attend it." Rogue replied to the Cuckoo near her that she'd given the box of cookies to. "Let me know though. I'll make you a ham sandwich for dinner, or something. You can eat it in your room." She smirked softly then about the video game and how she wasn't that familiar with their terminology for it. "And I teach combat training, I don't need to know what some some fat video game computer programmer thinks that means in his little space games." She lifts her bottle up to her lips for another drink of the bubbly soda, her eyes take note of Laura stepping into the room and should Laura look in her direction Rogue would offer a small wave of her free hand.

***

Laura's nostrils flare briefly - too quickly to notice unless you were paying attention. "Hello, Phoebe," she says to the Cuckoo in front of her, then tilts her head a moment before nodding. "… I think I would like dinner," she replies, then makes her way inside, looking ever so slightly at a loss for what to do next in a crowd.

***

Irma goes about setting up the map, looking at the screen for a few moments, "I'm pretty good at Fighters too." This is going to be a match up. Irma with human reflexes but ability to sense when and whatever Ember wants to do, and then Embers superhuman reflexes responding. It's going to be a lot of back and forth or missing in general. For now, however, Irma just sets the map to something with a lot of hiding locations, to attempt to maximize her strengths.

Immediately in response to Rogue, she says, "Uh, no, that's cool. I'll attend." She states, and squishes up her mouth a bit to one side, "A ham sandwich doesn't seem so great as an alternative, thanks for offering it though." The Cuckoo talking with Rogue continues, "I mean, there are quite a few studies out there that indicate a strong correlation between video gaming and hand-eye coordination. It could help anyone seriously interested in combat training."

Phoebe walks with Laura over to the table that another Cuckoo is already at and reading (That one Celest) and Phoebe sits down. She looks around a bit looking at how her sisters are faring about the room before turning to Laura, "Yeah, food sounds good."

***

Looking around the mansion is Scott who steps into the rec room. Looking about he heads straight towards Marie, "I know I gave permission to use my bike as you need it but.. Can you at least remember to fill up the tank?" he questions. "Where did you go to run out a full tank of gas anyway? Take a trip outside of the city perhaps or something."

***

Ember shrugs one shoulder at the mention of fighting games, "I'm just ok at those. Mainly the ones with 3D arenas. Not really a fan of the side-facers." Her mind… well, given her physical state, speed-of-light processing, and past lengthy span hosting the soul of a moderately insane Asgardian… it's a jumble to say the least. But as the map is chosen and the match gets underway, there are fairly frequent snapshots of near-normalcy as she decides on routes, tactics, and lines up shots. All in all, it's not the one-sided ass kicking she'd hoped for when Irma started the trash talk. She's holding her own, but unlike her online ranked match she actually gets to see the respawn screen a few times here and finds it harder than usual to pin down her blonde opponent.

***

Rogue leans back against the counter beside one of the fridge's. She folds her left arm over her stomach and hold the bottle of root beer near her chin while the Cuckoo speaks to her. "Video games are an excuse to sit on your butt and not do anything. You can get hand-eye-coordination outside doing all manner of things that involve physical exercise. Video games are just an 'I want to be lazy' excuse." She flashes the blonde girl a small grin. "But to each their own, I'm sure they're fun." Her green eyes then spot Scott just as he starts in on her about his bike. "Hey, Clops." She says back at him. "Look, I was gonna hitch a ride to the station and get a fill-up to bring back for your bike, I just been swamped all day. I'll get around to it. And… well, there was something going on in Bayville, I had to go check on it…" She vaguely answered his question.

***

Laura half-turns to look at Scott as she lets Phoebe lead her to the table to join the other Cuckoos. "Hi," she says simply, then looks around the room again, her attention drawn to the video game competition.

***

Esme is over by Rogue and Scott, and she quiets down when she hears Scott starting to bicker about a gas tank, and she smirks a little bit. Putting another cookie into her mouth, holding onto the box like she owns it. Then she takes a half-step back and says, "Also, just throwing it out there, video games don't waste gas."

Ember isn't getting her butt kicked, and Irma isn't winning as much as she normally likes to, but it's also harder because she can't cheat with her Telepathy as easily as she can with many others. Still, though, with all the Cuckoos in the room Irma's learning tactics, evolving upon what she is picking up, and it seems clear to Ember that at times Irma is testing a tactic to see how it works, and its those times she dies the most often, but Irma's getting better by the moment. "Fighters are great. Old school 2D especially, there's so limited of options for movement, it really focuses in on the strategy." Says the woman who can read minds.

Phoebe wonders to Laura, "You want to try at the game? Irma isn't gonna let up now, not for a while. She really likes 'mapping' people through games, video or otherwise, and then she'll just beat them after she knows the way they think, adjust, respond to stuff." She shrugs a little bit, leaning back in her seat, "It's really kind of boring to watch. It takes a while, especially in these kinds of games. Lots of options, lots of variables."

***

Scott raises a hand to the rest his attention for now on Marie, "That is fine I've taken care of it. Bayville? I take it you must have visited the mall there. Buy anything nice?" he asks vaguely listening as the others chatter about games or food.

***

"Too much emphasis on combos for me. My hands move faster than the controller, so I end up stumbling and crashing. Kinda the same way I drive." Ember shakes her head a bit, her form remainign opaque but losing some of its apparent mass as she shifts her concentration away from maintaining a normal state. When she overhears Phoebe mentioning Irma's use of games to map people mentally, she smirks and starts playing in ways that most would call insane: sniping with pistols, melee striking with battle rifles, and flying Phantoms just long and high enough to jump off and drop them like stones on or around her opponent. And she also cheats a bit in her own way: altering the light from the screen in an illusion that makes multiple copies of her avatar appear on Irma's half of the split-screen and polarizing her half so that it's only visible from the angle she's looking from. She gives Irma a sidelong grin, "Two can play, and all that."

***

Rogue looks over at Esme with the box of cookies and the sharp quip about games and gasoline. "Why don't you stuff a couple more cookies in that mouth?" She asks with a grin on her lips. Her eyes shot back over to Scott then. "Look, yeah… I went there to meet a friend and when I got there, there was a robbery going on and this guy…" She starts laughing as she describes. "He was dressed like he missed his bus to the costume convention, but he started chasing the thief and he brush his hand over my face as he went past… But he didn't fall over, or nothin'." She tells the fancy glasses wearing man mutant, Cyclops. "So… I kind of brought him here. I wanted to see if we could figure out who he is and… you know, why he's immune, to.. me. He's in the guest house."

***

Laura looks back at Phoebe, nodding as the Cuckoo's explanation makes sense. "You learn how she fights by watching her," she summarizes, then looks over at the game again. "… I don't play games very much," she admits reluctantly after a while. "I am not sure how to."

***

The fighting, crazily, doesn't change much in the way of how Irma fights back. It's a systematic thing, and like fingerprints, it isn't the actual events that Irma is mapping. She is rather pissed off at Phoebe though, and glares sidelong in the direction of her sister who is just 'blabbering' on about how she does things in video games. It makes the next bit a little more upsetting, since the illusions and visual cues DO actually matter for how she plays the game. That's when Irma starts to lose, and shakes her head, squinting "That's really somethin' you can make illusions." She gruffs out, "No illusion, really, just… lights out." And Irma blocks signals getting to Ember about 'vision'. Or as close to them as she can, hoping to have a blind opponent at this point. Irma, blinks a few times, and has to kind of stop playing for a moment as she's fiddling about inside of Ember's more complicated head.

Esme is looking over at Rogue and smiles a bit, "Hehe. That's funny. I mean, funny cause, you know costumes, and robbers, it's like a variant on cops and robbers." She smirks and eats another cookie, smiling at her joke, and just generally kicking it with the more 'adult' folks in the room.

Phoebe turns to Laura and focuses in on her more, "Yeah. I like to watch how others fight, I don't like playing the games. Irma just likes to be mean, to some extent. That's the short game though. You know? Gotta play for the long haul."

***

Scott looks over at Esme, "Don't ruin your dinner by eating a lot of cookies." he tells her before his attention returns to Marie, "What? You say someone was able to touch you without anything happening? Is he a mutant like us?"

***

Ember smirks at Irma's reaction to the illusions. "Yeah, it's always been my best trick. Only got better when the Trickster himself inhab… ah!!" When first the space in front of her and then everything else goes blind, Ember's reaction is a bit more visceral than what might be expected, especially for someone who no longer has any viscera. The fear of the dark she thought was never going to be an issue again comes back in full force along with flashes of memory tagged with notes of equal fear; The sounding of the Gjallarhorn, battling Jormangund, falling through reentry at the end of the fight, the blank nothing inside the cocoon afterwards. All burst past in half a heartbeat. And her physical form goes from as normal as she gets to nothing but a bursting brightness as she seems to explode in a burst of light as she staggars away from the couch. "Bringitbackbringitbackbringitback!"

***

Laura nods to Phoebe's explanation. "Sacrifice short term advantage for a long term victory," she parses — then shoots halfway out of her chair as Ember suddenly panics, tensing as she looks around for the source of the danger.

***

Marie smiled a bit at Scott's question. "He dressed a lot like some mutants I've met." She said, but then shook her head. "But nah, he said he's from some place called… Asgard. 'Not of this World'" she adds the last part with a bit of mocking immitation of the man's style of speaking. She catches the… oddness going on from the gaming sofas and her eyes sweep over to look at the students there.

***

There's a sigh, from Irma and she kills Ember one last time in the game, just cause, before letting the other girl have her sight back. The Cuckoos seem very much calmer than the rest of everyone else responding to Ember's freaking out. So, most of them don't tense up when Ember freaks out, or when minds start tensing and scattering thoughts. Instead, by Rogue, Esme says, "Weird. We met someone from Asgard a few months ago. We were trying to figure out 'where' that was… Loki, I think was his name. He's a horrible dresser." She states frankly, as if that's the important bit of information to gather from a possible alien demi-god.

Phoebe nods her head to Laura, and pulls back a bit, to avoid getting in the way of Laura's tensing existence. "Um, yeah, long term victory. It's cool, calm down. We're not in danger… I think." She says to Laura, but Celeste, the Cuckoo drawing in the book at the table, does tense up with everyone getting all nervous and tense from Ember bursting into a brilliant ball of light.

***

Scott listens at Marie's story, "I've heard of Asgard. It has been a while of course." he rubs a hand on his chin before looking towards the others. "WE DO NOT USE OUR POWERS ON EACH OTHER." his voice is raised to get the point across. "Rogue, find me later and we can talk more." turning he heads out of the room.

***

After getting her sight back Ember doesn't immediately 'return' to herself, but instead the room remains considerably brighter all around as her form is spread out across it. But before too long she starts to pull herself together again and the brightness gathers back into one spot and forms into Ember's familiar form, although when Loki is mentioned she shifts her appearance so her outfit is something of a mix between her normal denim and Asgardian court fashion with Loki's green hues prevelant. Her voice, again just above a whisper, is heard from her general direction (obviously not from her mouth), "Eh. Asgardian fashion can be alright with a bit of tweaking, I think." When she's together enough to have enough of a face that she can give Irma an irked look she does so, "That was… yeah. Let's keep that tactic on the 'nope' list, please?" She doesn't say anything about getting ganked while she was panicing, though. Some things are just fair play.

***

Laura looks slightly dubious, but allows Phoebe to calm her enough to sit back down, although she keeps a suspicious eye on Ember for a bit longer. "Why did you do that?" she asks of Irma.

***

Rogue watches the situation at the sofas and she hears Scott's loud bark of the order, but she entirely agrees with everything he said. "Alright, No more video games." She says, glancing over to see Scott stepping out of the room. She looks back to Ember and the Cuckoo she was playing with. She then regarads everyone the room. "Lets just pack it up in here for now. Ya'll go do homework or go outside." She turns around and sets her mostly finished soda bottle down, reaching over she takes the box of cookies from Esme and moves to put them away.

***

Irma smirks and settles the controller down on the couch, looking over at Ember, "Wow, well, I guess I win this round then." She states and looks back over her shoulder, Sophie… who's been in the corner reading the entire time finally sighs and gets up. "Alright, let's go shopping, I feel like I want to get out anyhow." And before any of the other Cuckoos can protest, they are standing up in unison with Sophie, and then congregating towards the door. Phoebe waves to Laura, "Sorry, time to go outside." She states as the other sisters get up as well, Esme about to make some sort of comment about the cookie box before she just stops, turns and walks away with a slight huff just in time to meet with her other sisters near the middle of the room. They then start heading out, in sync in their stepping, and swagger. Not getting into each other's way at all despite being rather close to one another.

***

Ember does an eyeroll to Irma but nods, "Yeah, I guess you do. Next match is done online, though." As to Scott and Rogue's admonitions that the fun's over in here, she shrugs a bit. "Sure. I could use a recharge after all that." She turns toward Laura to offer an appologetic shrug. "Didn't mean to startle. Just… yeah." She waves as her form once more starts to become transparent and diffuse. "I'll try to actually show up for dinner, despite the givens." Then as her mass and form return to her relaxed state of diffusion she drifts out through the window and out into the sunlight.
