Title: Looking for (and getting) a reason to stay

Coming back to the Institute was a lot less painful than Ember had been fearing, with even Anna-Marie welcoming her back with a smile. And she was one of the staff that Ember could never get a solid read on when she was just a student. So that was a lot of worrying done in Jupiter's orbit for nothing, but she's been back for over a week and still hasn't been able to get any kind of answers as to what's been going on while she was away. And the woman that invited her back in the first place has been scarce since their meeting in Chinatown. So Ember has been spending her days being useful wherever possible, reading in the library and working on her Halo rankings. And leaving messages with Emma every couple days just to remind the telepath that she's here. Today she's in the art gallery, experiencing the Professor's collection with her new senses.

Emma steps into the room, her blond hair done up in a tight bun and she has a pair of black framed glasses on the end of her nose. The headmistress carries a tablet under one arm and her other had sways gently to keep her gait balanced on her lengthy heels. "It's been a hell of a time finding time to respond to you Ember." Admits the white queen with a smile on her white painted lips. "I see you've been having a bit of trouble finding your way back into the school." Emma speaks opening, getting right to the issue at hand.

"When I first came here, it wasn't exactly my idea." Ember's voice comes from the middle of her true form, which strongly resembles a sun the size of a beach ball. "I was eventually able to get Professor Xavier to admit that he'd arranged for the interview invitation to be put in with those from schools that I'd actually applied to so that he could show me this place. Somewhere that I could be myself without fear." The sun shifts in on itself to a feminine form and then is wrapped in the personal illusion Ember wears when she wants or needs to seem fully human. She might be a free-floating energy matrix these days, but she still feels it's polite to look people eye-to-eye when speaking with them.

"Back then I wasn't the easiest to get to know, because I wanted to get as much living done as possible before my iminent expiration date. My powers were eating me alive, and I wanted to do… everything before the meal was finished. And then Ragnarok happened and instead of dying I changed. And no one here seemed to care or even notice. And then Scott decided that because I wasn't a student and no one had bothered to talk to me about staying on, that I didn't need to be here at all." She shrugs one shoulder and looks at Emma, "So I didn't just leave the Institute, I left the planet. Spent months just flying and drifting in places that I'd only ever read about doing things I never would've had the chance to do if I wasn't a mutant. It was wonderful, and it was lonely. And the very first day I came back to Earth I run into you and you ask me back here, saying that I can be more of a help that I know. Then I get here and the few people who knew me seem pleased to see me again, but I still don't have a place or a purpose here."

"Living beings. Or in your case, conscious beings." Emma begins and pauses just a bit, "In my own experiences never have a true purpose, except in the case of organics, is to reproduce and continue the species." Emma says with a shrug, "So really do what you feel you want to do in that day. Me, I've chosen to help mutants like myself learn how to cope with this world and defend themselves and those around them." Emma explains her view, not sure if it'll help but it's how she feels the best way to cope with the question of existence. "You could very well do the same, and with your drastic change, you're more qualified to help those in similar situations."

One of Ember's eyebrow illusions quirks upwards at the highly existential answer from Ms. Frost. She pauses briefly before responding, "I was thnking along somewhat more… mundane lines, actually. You said I could help others like myself in ways I don't know. But everything seems to be running fine here. Some people are worried about sentinels, but not to the degree that it's affecting normal operations of the school." She shrugs again and wills herself solid enough that she can sit on the bench she was previously hovering over. "I'm not qualified to teach anything, and I don't know if I still have any kind of possition with the New Mutants. Even if I did, I think I'd be the only one these days. And I'm sure that there'd be objections to me asking about joining the X-Men roster." She looks Emma in the eyes and asks, "So what did you have in mind, concretely, when you asked me back here, Ms. Frost? Because I've been adrift for more than long enough and I'd like to really, truly come home but need to have something to /do/ here other than make my way through the book collection."

Emma puts a hand to her chin. "You'd be a great counselor, and if that doesn't suit you, I would like you to start working on an astrophysics degree and teach science." Emma is rather quick with that answer. "As far as the Sentinels and X-men, you're on the team, as I've been trying to rebuild it myself lately and it hasn't quite been working of late." The white queen admits, "Though I fear a time will come shortly when the school will be targeted by those damn things."

***

It's good that Ember is wearing her human seeming, because her true form just doesn't have the facial expressons (or any kind of face, rather) to convey the combination of doubt, bemusement, and surprise that Emma's words evoke in her mind. First the doubt, "I'm barely holding myself together as it is, so being a counselor…" Then her mind takes over from her mouth and she considers the idea. "Then again, I'm not someone they'd see as an adult and could talk to me more openly about things. Not too different from how Kitty helped me when I was a student." The bemusement comes from the casual way that Emma mentions getting an astrophysics degree, but that's a thought and a subject for another day. And then the surprise, "I'm… on the team, the X-Men? Seriously? Just like that?" And then there's the comment about sentinels attacking the school at some point. "Do they know about this place?"

***

"See, even you are thinking of reasons you should stay and help." Emma says with a smirk, then a raised eyebrow, "Like I said, we're in the middle of a rebuilding process but yeah, you're an X-man, just don't talk to the kids about it, as it's illegal, okay." Emma says with a hand on Ember's knee. "No, not at the moment, but it seems like they're doing systematic sweeps of the city, and they're going further out each time. It seems like just a matter of time before we're a target."

***

"Of course I'm thinking of reasons to stay. This place was my home. But it was also a home that I was kicked out of, so I'm sure you understand my wanting to have it actually stated that I'm welcome again." Ember's smirk is a match for Emma's in its tone, and even its blue-blooded eloquence, which might be considered odd for a 'engine greese in the skin' type like Ember has always presented as. "Yes, no talking about being a member of a nonsanctioned armed resistance group in front of the children. I think I can handle that." She thinks about what Emma says about the sentinels for a few moments and nods. "Should talk to Rogue about running emergency drills with the students. Get them used to the idea of running for the shelters."

***

Emma gives Ember a nod. "You should certainly do that, I'll meet with Marie to inform her of your idea." Emma then quietly get back to her feet and starts to make her way back to the door. "If you'll excuse me, I have a few things to be running." Then before she slips through the door, Emma adds, "It's nice to have you back Ember."
